Make It Monday 2012: January Goals

Happy New Year!

I hope that 2012 has been treating you well so far!

This year I'm going to switch it up a bit. Instead of constantly posting great ideas from around the internet that I love yet never even lift a finger to accomplish. So... on the first Monday of each month, I'm going to post goals for myself.

(Don't worry, on the other Mondays of the month I'll still post those wonderful DIYs that I never even try :)

Goal #1

A few years ago, I stumbled upon the concept of Project Life by the fabulous Becky Higgins. I successfully completed my entire album in 2009! In 2010 I took a photo almost every day but never quite got them organized into an album. In 2011, I didn't even try. This year I've decided to tackle Project Life again. I'm in a new town, in a new home, with a new outlook on life, health and happiness. I'm ready now, and I vow to keep up with my daily photos and journaling all month. (Obviously this is going to be on my goals list every month this year.)

Goal #2

My second goal is part of a year-long goal. I have signed up for the Move More Eat Well class at Big Picture Classes. This class is taught by one of my favorite scrapbookers and motivators: Cathy Zielske. She is so real, honest and hilarious, and I really think she (and the online community of classmates) are going to help motivate me to become a healthier and happier me. My goal this month is to create the introductory and January pages (we are documenting this in a scrapbook :) and share them here by the end of the month. I will also be documenting my food intake and exercise routines daily.

Goal #3

The next goal is to finish my Hello December Album from the Journal Your Christmas Class by Shimelle. I have to say, this is the third year I have attempted this and this year I'm pretty close to finishing. My goal is to have the album (documenting December 1-January 6th) completed and blogged by the end of the month. (BTW, if you're looking for a little scrappy inspiration, go check out shimelle.com. Now. I'll wait. Believe me, after three classes and daily inspiration Shimelle has helped me become so much more passionate about scrapbooking again.)

Have I Mentioned Halloween Yet?

After 17 years together,

18 Halloweens (Our first date was on Halloween, isn't that cool?)

and nine different residences,

this is the first time we've ever passed out candy!!!!

Believe it or not, this is the first time we've lived anywhere where there are trick-or-treaters. (Our apartments have all had security doors!)

In order to prepare for the big celebration, over the weekend we had loaded up the shopping cart with all kinds of sweets, reluctantly handed over a small fortune, and hunted for all the unused bowls within a reasonable distance.

I rushed home from work on Monday (stopping real quickly at the grocery store for the good 'ol frozen pizza and wings combo) to find Rexy in a pile of newspaper, wielding a sharpie marker, giant spoon and knife, working with Edward Scissorhand like precision on a pumpkin who never really had a chance.

His first attempt was at a block S (Go green!) so we could "represent" during this festive night...but it was not to be. The S came out more like a backwards 3 with a droop, so my little engineer quickly reassembled Jack and started on a new plan.

I too had a plan. A plan I had been thinking about for days...

but first there was a bit of work to be done.

In record time Jill had been freed of her excess baggage and I began skillfully

(and rather quickly) creating a masterpiece to be displayed for the world to see.

Just as we had finished creating, the doorbell rang for the first time and the screaming little monsters were greeted by the most enthusiastic (part) German accordian player you've ever met.

For the next hour, our worlds were a blur of candy, children, music, laughter and thank yous. It really doesn't get much better than this. Really.

Can you guess who I am? The little ones knew, and a couple of very special teenagers (because I deemed them so and rewarded them with extra candy) did.

(Yohan got into the spirit of things too!)

In typical I-love-you-small-town fashion, at 7:00 the fireworks went off (in our backyard) and porch lights all around us shut down for the night.

We took one last photo and headed with the herds toward the Lion's Club just behind our house. Neighbors, community members, friends and friends of friends were all lined up laughing, talking and scaring one another. Tables upon tables overflowed with giant bowls of candy, pyramids of cinnamon sugar donuts, hot dogs fresh off the grill and more cider than one could imagine. The bonfire glowed in the background as children chased one another in the dark.

We just stood back and took it all in.

After 18 years, THIS felt like our first Halloween...

and it was perfect.

I Guess I've Been Avoiding You

Well, I haven't been avoiding YOU, I've been avoiding this blog.

If you've been with me for a few years you've probably noticed that it gets awfully quiet around here each September. Going back to school each fall forces me to reorganize my life and get back into a routine, therefore spending less time being as crafty and productive at home.

This fall has been a bit different. A bit quiet. A bit sad.

I have been trying to get through everyday life, teaching a new grade with lots of changes, while dealing with some personal losses.

Over the last month I have lost my dear grandmother and also a friend.

Both losses have been very hard for me.

Harder than I've let anyone know.

I feel like I've been in a fog. My memory of the last month is a blur.

That's why I've been avoiding you.

Not because I haven't had anything to share, but because I've felt so numb and so behind that I wasn't sure what to share.

Don't be surprised if I pull out the summer beach photos between now and Christmas. Don't be shocked when I show you fall photos (It is my favorite time of year after all!) and there is snow on the ground.

Just know that I've missed you and I am back.

Thank you for hanging in there with me,

and for all your kind words over the last month.

Where Were You When The World Stopped Turning?

Do you remember that song by Alan Jackson?

I wish with all my heart that I couldn't connect with such a song,

but I can.

"Where were you when the world stopped turning that September day?
Teaching a class full of innocent children,"

That is exactly what I was doing.

I had just started my second year teaching 5th grade. I was heading down the hallway, back toward my classroom to finish up some early morning paperwork while my children were at a special (Phys.Ed to be exact) when I was called into (our principal) Sue's office. She didn't say anything, just pointed at the television in her office. It took me a moment to figure out that there was something terrible happening. I remember her saying something about an "attack". I don't think she used the word terrorist, it really wasn't on our minds back then. I remember watching the first plane hit the building and being unable to say anything except, "I've never seen anything like this." I will never forget what she said to me in return. Sue simply said, "No one's ever seen anything like this."

That's when a part of me started to die inside.

I remember, moments after her comment began to sink in, as I stood glued to the television, the reporter came back on in a panicked voice telling us that what we had just seen was not the replay that they had already begun looping for the world to see, but a second plane hitting a building.

A second plane.

This wasn't an accident.

This wasn't an accident.

"Did you stand there in shock at the site of
That black smoke rising against that blue sky,
Did you shout out in anger
In fear for your neighbor
Or did you just sit down and cry,"

I just sat down and cried. Right there at Sue's table.

When I saw the second plane hit, I recognized the buildings.

I simply looked her in the eyes and told her,

"Brock works in that building".

I'm not really sure what I said after that. Maybe nothing.

I was in shock. I'm not even sure if I mentioned how I knew Brock.

He was my neighbor. Not right next door, not on the same street, but close enough to go to the same elementary school, shop at the same grocery store, and get a ride home from each day after high school.

Close enough to have been a part of each other's lives for the past 20 years.

It was so incredibly hard to pick up my children and continue the day without letting them know that anything had happened.

I was scared.

I was scared for Brock. I was scared for his family.

I was scared for my family, for Rex and for myself.

We all tried to keep smiles on our faces the rest of the day, sneaking "bathroom breaks" to check to see if the news was reporting any sort of answer as to why this was happening. At lunch we learned about the Pentagon and the plane that went down in Pennsylvania. We began to hear stories of heroes emerging from the smoke, and those who gave their lives to help others that day.

We tried to call home at lunch. Most of us didn't get an answer.

Somehow we made it through that day at school.

I remember shutting off the lights at the end of the day.

I paused and just stared at that empty classroom.

I really had no idea when we would be back to work.

What had happened to the world in those last 8 hours?

In that moment I clearly remember thinking,

"It will never be the same.

The world has changed for these children."

We really did change that day.

I remember so much, so clearly, about that day and the weeks to follow, but at the same time, I feel like I was in a fog for months.

We watched flags appear on buildings, in front yards, on cars.

We saw stickers, clothing, mugs, signs, nearly everything imaginable adorned with the American Flag.

We hoped

and prayed.

"Driving down some cold interstate
Did you feel guilty cause you're a survivor"

I did. Constantly.

Brock was one of the most amazingly smart, talented and genuine people I had ever known. Why did It have to be him?

"In a crowded room did you feel alone"

No matter how many people surrounded me with kind words and hugs,

I felt alone.

"Did you call up your mother and tell her you love her"

Every. Single. Day.

We talked about what had happened. Daddy told me not to be scared.

(He even presented me with statistics to help ease my mind.)

We talked about Brock.

At one point Brock's mom even thought she had seen him on a news clip.

We kept hoping.

"Did you open your eyes and hope it never happened
Close your eyes and not go to sleep"

I still do.

That's the miracle of it all really. I think we all became more aware of just how blessed and lucky we were. We were no longer strangers to one another. We had a common experience that bound us all as one family. And as a family we vowed to move forward. To show the world that our hearts may have been broken, but that our bodies and our spirits weren't.

We WOULD get back up.

And we would appreciate what we have, and who we are.

We are PROUD to be Americans.

"Did you turn off that violent old movie you're watching
And turn on "I Love Lucy" reruns
Did you go to a church and hold hands with some stranger
Stand in line and give your own blood
Did you just stay home and cling tight to your family
Thank God you had somebody to love"

We did.

It helped.

Little by little it helped us heal.

"Did you burst out in pride
For the red white and blue

The heroes who died just doing what they do"

For years I had trouble with the Pledge of Allegiance every morning. There's just something so jarring and innocent about it coming out of the mouths of ten year olds. Do they really understand how much that flag means? Do they treat it with the respect it deserves? Do they understand how many have given their lives for it?

I hope someday they will.

"Did you look up to heaven for some kind of answer
And look at yourself to what really matters"

I like to think I value life differently now.

I lead with my heart.

I'll be the first to admit that I don't always manage my time wisely, but I, (WE) do not take our friends and family for granted anymore. We TRULY value the people in our lives. We would do anything for them.

We laugh with them, cry with them, and give them our hearts.

We are proud to live our lives this way.

In a way, it helps us heal.

It's hard to believe that it has been ten years already. I can't say that I spend every day thinking about Brock or the tragedy of September 11th, but it's never far from my mind. The dreams come only once in a while now. Always Brock, always comforting, telling me things will be okay. I always wake up feeling like he's given me a big hug.

The others reminders are less painful now too:

bowling shoes (he had the largest feet of anyone I've ever known),

a Pearl Jam song on the radio (his favorite),

a visit to the meat counter at Tom's (where he worked),

a Lion's game on TV (he loved the Lions!),

running across stacks of letters he wrote me in college,

they help me remember the good.

I still surf the internet every once in a while looking for kind words that others have written about Brock. And there are so many kind articles written about him. Most by people who never even knew him, who never caught that smirk he would give you when he was about to say something completely hilarious, yet a bit cutting at the same time.

Susan,

While surfing the internet today I found your blog. Although you did not know Brock, you have done an amazing job paying tribute to him. Thank you for your kindness and generosity in a world where life can be a bit of a challenge at times.

I met Brock on my first day of Kindergarten. We survived two years of elementary school together and were separated for the academic years to follow, only to be reunited each summer on the ball field. My brother and his brother Aaron were on a team together and his sister Cyrina and my sister were on a team together. Needless to say, I spend most of my free time at the ball field either hanging out with Brock or watching him play with his own team. In junior high, we began spending more time together as we were placed in some of the same classes. In high school we were together a lot. My boyfriend Kyle was one of his best friends. Throughout high school and into the first couple years of college, we could be found listing to music (always HIS favorites), bowling, hanging out, playing catch and football and hunting in his backyard for mushrooms. Brock always gave me a hard time (I was the only girl in the group) and picked on me merciliously, but I always knew how much he cared. I recently ran across a pile of letters (snail-mail at that) that Brock wrote me in college. They were filled with great memories, friendly insults, and enough quotes to make you relive the 90′s. I am so very grateful to have these concrete symbols of our friendship. I loved Brock dearly and think of him so very often. I wish he didn’t have to leave so soon. Thank you Susan for such a moving tribute. You are a hero to me.

Just between you and me, September 11th is hard for me.

It's the day Brock, and so many others were taken from us unexpectedly.

The day we remember the shock and devastation.

But I want to remember Brock as he lived.

The 10th Anniversary specials on television are of no interest to me today.

It would be impossible to tell all the stories of the people who were lost that day.

And honestly, they only truly matter to those who hold them in their hearts.

That's where you will forever be for me Brock, in my heart.

Starting today I will choose to focus only on how you lived.

I've got so much to share from this summer,

but so little time left before school starts!

On the plus side:

* My 4TH GRADE(!) room is all set up and ready to go

*I've got a brand new teaching partner

whom I already knew through best friends M & E

*I just started two new online journaling classes today

(more on that later)

*I've got a few days off to catch up on some scrapping

*and it is supposed to be the perfect beach day tomorrow!

Here's to the last few days of summer vacation,

I for one am planning on making the most of it!

WITL Day 1

What is WITL you ask?

WITL stands for Week in the Life.

Week in the Life is a project put together by Ali Edwards (scrapbooker extraordinaire). This is my third year participating in the project. The first year we documented a week in the fall, last year it was a week in the spring, and this year the project fell in late July. Perfect timing as far as I was concerned because I was already planning to be up north with my family for the week.

Due to my inability to do anything the easy way (when it comes to scrapbooking and documenting) I started the project a couple days early and then extended it a few days! It would have been a shame to end right before our anniversary right? Then we had to document the discovery of a new campground and favorite relaxing spot on the shores of Lake Huron.....

Anyway, my Week in the Life quickly turned into TWO Weeks in the Life. That's right, fourteen whole days. So here they are, complete with photo and video tallies,

{two} how have you changed in the past year?I've actually felt more like a responsible adult since we bought our house in December. I'm still a kid at heart though, despite the increasing number of gray hairs I'm noticing.

{one} do you watch the history channel? if so, what’s your favorite program?I end up watching the History Channel by default quite a bit. Rex watches American Pickers, Pawn Stars, Top Shot, Modern Marvels, and Swamp People. American Pickers and Pawn Stars actually hold my attention, the others...not so much.
{two} what is your favorite thing to do on a rainy day?Cuddle up, read a book and listen to the rain
{three} what does your dream house look like?A great big open kitchen, lots of handmade decor, a fireplace, deck, a space for entertaining and a space for crafting....oh wait, I'm living in it!

{five} do you have a change jar? if so, what do you use it for when it gets full?We do have a change jar! The last one was donated to a school fundraiser. I'm not sure what we'll do with this one when it is full.

{one} have you ever fainted?This is something that happens to me every once in a while, due to the fact that I'm anemic.
{two} what is your favorite casino game?My favorite was a mechanical miniature horse racing game in an old casino in Vegas. Unfortunately, we have't been able to find it the last few times we've gone.
{three} do you have a good sense of direction?No way. For the first few years after I moved into my current classroom, I kept turning the wrong direction. Speaking of directions, I'm a landmark kind of girl. Please don't tell me to go east, etc. I'll get it wrong every time. And yes, I turn the map to navigate.
{four} laptop or desktop?Both. I use the laptop or ipad the most though. Our desktop (with all our photos!) recently came down with the "blue screen of death" as Rex calls it.
{five} what is your go-to hair style when having a bad hair day?Messy ponytail
{six} do you read the newspaper on a daily basis?No. I try to keep up with the TV news and the internet.
{seven} do you have a favorite celebrity chef?Rachel Ray?
{eight} what tv show would you like to make a guest appearance on?Bones or How I Met Your Mother. LOVE those shows.
{nine} do you have satellite radio in your car?No, but I have a CD player. My last car (which my husband now drives) has a tape deck!
{ten} what was the last movie that made you cry?I really don't know. I'm not even sure what movie I watched last!

A Peek into My (Writing) Journal

(I wrote this today during a Writer's Workshop lesson with my fifth graders.)

Feels Like Home

I know it’s only been a little over 3 months, but I truly feel at home here.

It’s so refreshing to head home after a hectic day at work, pull my dust covered silver van into my garage, head into the house to wash up my lunch dishes, catch up with the furbabies, and just feel relaxed.

Even the activities that shouldn’t feel relaxing, do. Doing laundry, dishes, sweeping, cleaning each and every room (and a basement!), it’s all so enjoyable. Every single day I find myself noticing something new here and smiling. From the wind blowing through our evergreens, to the pitter- patter of the raindrops on our roof, and the ability to walk barefoot out onto our deck and enjoy the sunshine,

every day is a blessing here.

Sure, I miss the closeness of neighbors in an apartment. I miss the piece of mind being on the second floor provides, knowing there is a security door to protect me when I’m all alone. But these things are dwarfed by the comfort I feel here. I wouldn’t trade this home for the world.

Here, I can’t wait to get out and discover the changing of the seasons and community activities each season brings in this little town. I can’t wait to have long, laughter-filled, impromptu conversations with the neighbors as the sun sets over the fields. I can’t wait to plant flowers I don’t even know how to pronounce, let alone take care of. I can’t wait to go for long, drawn-out walks hand in hand through the fields with my soulmate. I can’t wait to have trick-or–treaters, bbqs and neighborhood get togethers. I can’t wait to throw magical parties under the hot-air balloons as they travel lazily overhead. I can’t wait to spend summer days reading on the deck and enjoying the slight relief the breeze gives on those hotter than hot days. I can’t wait to hold little hands, cuddle wet noses and raise a family here.

The funny thing is…

I thought the waiting was over when we signed the papers to this place.

Turns out, the waiting has just begun.

Although I had the entire week off for spring break, I somehow managed to neglect my "Make This!" folder on my computer. I must say, I did deep clean the whole house, run lots of errands, unpack numerous boxes in the basement and throw a little girls get-together, so the week was very productive overall.

Do you remember the chalkboard door from last week's post?

Well, I didn't get to the pantry door as I had hoped, but I did manage to spruce up a little corner in our bedroom. This frame is actually the access panel for the back of our jacuzzi tub. Big, bold and ugly in the middle of our wall. So I fixed it. I used chalkboard paint within the built in frame and made it a cute little landing place for youngsters that come to visit. Doesn't the chair look cute next to it? (The chair is one of my most loved possessions from my childhood.)

It's amazing how just a few coats of paint can spruce up a space isn't it?

I though I would share a few random photos from the last month or so:

Crab leg dinner,

the only Shamrock Shake this year,

the first batch of homemade cinnamon rolls

rising in the sunshine (the week before the official start of spring),

lots of bird watching,

and (hopefully) the last big storm before spring.

I purchased an ipad from a friend,

which my 18 month old nephew caught onto real quick!

I celebrated my 36th birthday at home with my family,

and ate the first of two chocolate cakes.

Stole lots of cuddles,

and woke up in the middle of the night to take this photo

out my bedroom window.

I celebrated my birthday again with my husband,

complete with an awesome photo shoot.

I watched a giant read from the top of our school roof as

a reward for our beanstalk growing all the way around the school and out the doors,

and watched the furbabies try to steal my balloons... for DAYS.

I came real close to completing my 30 Days of Lists Journal,

and found the most AMAZING line of dollar items at Michaels!

These are going to be PERFECT invites and popcorn bags for the

hot air balloon parties we plan on throwing over the years.

( Did I mention that the balloons take off from our backyard?!!!!)

Now we're just enjoying the wonderful spring-like weather.

I hope you're having great weather in your little neck of the woods too!
